Health and Hygiene

Mariatu's Hope strategy: SLTS (student led total sanitation)
We believe the key to finally overcoming the water and sanitation crisis in Sierra Leone is through education. If we can empower students through teaching proper WaSH (water, sanitation and hygiene) methodologies and build the facilities to support the training (clean water and toilets with hand washing), they will become the generation that initiates positive health and hygiene development in their communities and throughout the nation.
Two thirds of the population has little or no education at all. We can build toilets and drill wells but without proper and consistent health and hygiene training, meaningful development in the WaSH sector "will not happen". This is the single most important aspect of improved individual and community health development.
The founders of Mariatu's Hope have completed 25 WaSH projects at schools. Over 10,000 students now have safe water access and proper sanitation with consistent health and hygiene training. We have over 750 Child Health Club members. Mariatu's Hope is committed to protect this huge investment by continuing to work with schools, students, teachers, WaSH committees, communities and government to ensure successful development.
