Mariatu's Hope strategy: SLTS (student led total sanitation)
We believe the key to finally overcoming the water and sanitation crisis in Sierra Leone is through education. If we can empower students through teaching proper WaSH (water, sanitation and hygiene) methodologies and build the facilities to support the training (clean water and toilets with hand washing), they will become the generation that initiates positive health and hygiene development in their communities and throughout the nation.
We can build toilets and drill wells but without proper and consistent health and hygiene training, meaningful development in the WaSH sector "will not happen". This is the single most important aspect for sustainable individual and community health development.
Mariatu's Hope has completed many WaSH projects at schools. Thousands of students now have safe water access and proper sanitation with consistent health and hygiene training. Mariatu's Hope has empowered hundreds of Child Health Heros.
MH remains committed to protect this huge investment by continuing to work with schools, students, teachers, WaSH committees, communities and government to ensure sustainable development.
